Patriots may benefit from Cardinals' QB strategy.

Fans hoping the New England Patriots pick a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft got good news on Tuesday.

Jonathan Gannon, Arizona Cardinals head coach, told Burns and Gambo radio show that Kyler Murray will be their quarterback. He was questioned if he doubted his 2024 QB.

There is no doubt," Gannon laughed. "'Number 1' is our franchise quarterback."

Murray, 26, extended his Cardinals contract through 2028 with a five-year, $230 million deal. His future in Arizona was uncertain owing to where the club is expected to choose in 2024. The Cardinals hold the fourth overall pick in Week 18 and can reach No. 2 by the season's end.

Gannon's comments imply they won't pursue Caleb Williams or Drake Maye even if they beat the Patriots for the No. 3 selection. If the Chicago Bears (No. 1 overall) commit to Justin Fields, New England's chances of landing its next franchise quarterback improve.

If the Pats choose behind the Cardinals, they might trade up for their QB with Arizona. Other QB-needy clubs will likely follow suit.

The Patriots play the Jets on Sunday to finish their regular season. Fans aiming for a top-three choice will root for a defeat, but other league performances will determine New England's April deadline.

Sunday's season finale at Gillette Stadium begins at 1 p.m. ET.
