The Giants were a team to watch Thursday night at the 2024 NFL Draft. Will they deal for a quarterback? Will they stay at No. 6 to meet a need or trade back for picks? As picks started arriving, the Giants were at No. 6 with a choice.
GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll chose LSU star Malik Nabers. They're delighted to get Malik. Schoen said this guy has been on our radar for a while. Excellent hands, can play several positions in a tough conference. Hope to see him tomorrow and in the building.
“I’m excited about Malik,” Daboll remarked. This man was fun to analyze. He is fast, explosive, and runs after catches. His play style is competitive. Bring him in with the receivers and offense; I'm excited to work with him.” With Rome Odunze still available and Marvin Harrison Jr. picked at No. 4, Schoen detailed what separated Nabers from the University of Washington receiver.
We meet frequently during the season. We believed Malik's toughness, separation speed, and not that Rome doesn't have those things filled all those boxes, Schoen said. "He will bring toughness, competitiveness, production, and versatility."
In his third season at LSU, Nabers caught 89 receptions for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns. These figures may revive QB Daniel Jones' career and improve the Giants' offense, which finished last in the league.
The Giants may terminate Jones' contract after this season, so many expected them to choose his successor. When they choose a receiver, why not J.J. McCarthy or Michael Penix was questioned. Schoen said they had many evening plans but were happy with the Nabers' choice.
We were going to have conversations in front of us and behind us,” Schoen said. An opportunity arose to leave the pick.We had different ideas and are thrilled to have Malik Nabers. We like how it turned out.” Schoen says he's OK not drafting a quarterback this year but wouldn't rule out Day Two or Three.
The Giants selected LSU wideout Nabers in the first round, 10 years after Odell Beckham Jr. moved to New York. Daboll avoided comparisons and stressed what made Nabers the Giants' best pick.
I won't compare him to anyone. He stated he plays great. He has an excellent personality, demeanor, stamina, and toughness. He's a fielddog. He is a self-starter who is eager to learn and embrace opportunities.
